Digital Betacam was a professional digital video format introduced by Sony in 1993 as an improvement over its earlier Betacam and Betacam SP analog video formats. It uses a digital component recording format that provides high-quality video and audio with very low noise and distortion.
Digital Betacam tapes are physically the same size as Betacam and Betacam SP tapes, but they use digital recording technology instead of analog. The format records 10-bit, 4:2:2 digital video at a resolution of 720×486 pixels for NTSC and uses a 2:1 compression scheme to store video data at a bitrate of up to 90 Mbps.
Digital Betacam was widely used in the broadcast and professional video production industry until the rise of digital formats like HDV, XDCAM, and AVCHD.
