All 35mm Slide Scanning is completed in-house at our secure facility in London, Ontario, Canada. Your original slides remain in our care throughout the scanning process and are never sent to an outside company.

Slide Materials and Construction

A 35mm photographic slide contains a positive image recorded on transparent film. The film is normally made with a cellulose triacetate or polyester base coated with light-sensitive photographic emulsion layers.

The individual film frame is held inside a protective mount commonly made from:

• Cardboard

• Plastic

• Thin metal

• Glass on certain slide types

Older colour slides may use different film stocks and dye formulations. The film, emulsion and mount can all be affected by age, moisture, heat, dust, fingerprints and prolonged exposure to light.

This service is intended for standard mounted 35mm photographic slides.

Typical dimensions include:

• Film width: 35 mm

• Image area: approximately 24 × 36 mm

• Standard slide mount: approximately 50 × 50 mm

• Standard mount size: approximately 2 × 2 inches

The exact visible image area may vary depending on the camera, film stock and slide mount. Contact Precision Transfers before ordering if your slides are unmounted, glass-mounted, unusually thick, damaged or a different photographic format.

A minimum order of 40 slides applies to this service.

Digital images are delivered in a widely compatible format suitable for everyday viewing, sharing and storage. Contact Precision Transfers before ordering if you require a particular file format, colour profile, custom resolution, specialized naming system or advanced image restoration.

Care and Preparation

Keep slides inside protective boxes, trays or archival sleeves before submitting them. Store them in a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and high humidity.

Handle slides only by the outer mount. Avoid touching the film surface because fingerprints and skin oils can damage the image or affect scanning quality.

Do not clean slides with water, household cleaners or compressed air from an unverified source. Do not remove film from its mount unless instructed by a qualified technician.

Organize slides in the preferred scanning order and place them in clearly labelled groups. Use numbered boxes, trays or dividers to identify separate years, events or collections. Avoid using rubber bands, adhesive tape or materials that could leave residue on the slides.

Contact Precision Transfers before shipping slides with visible mould, broken mounts, cracked glass, severe curling, water damage or loose film.

After receiving the digital images, save backup copies in at least two locations, such as an external drive and secure cloud storage.
