DVCPro and DVCAM Tape Transfer to Digital
Preserve professional video recordings with the DVCPro and DVCAM Tape Transfer service from Precision Transfers. We convert DVCAM and DVCPRO tapes into modern digital files that can be viewed, copied, edited, archived and shared without relying on discontinued tape equipment.
DVCAM and DVCPRO were professional versions of the DV recording system. They were widely used during the 1990s and 2000s for television news, corporate productions, documentaries, training programs, live events and other professional video applications.
Both formats store video digitally on magnetic tape, but they were developed by different manufacturers and require compatible professional playback equipment. DVCAM was developed by Sony, while DVCPRO was developed by Panasonic.
Tape Materials and Construction
DVCAM and DVCPRO cassettes contain 6.35 mm, or ¼-inch, magnetic videotape housed inside a protective plastic shell.
DVCAM commonly uses metal-evaporated magnetic tape with a protective surface layer. DVCPRO commonly uses metal-particle tape designed for professional recording environments.
A typical cassette contains:
-
Two internal tape reels
-
6.35 mm magnetic recording tape
-
A rigid plastic cassette shell
-
A sliding protective tape cover
-
Internal tape guides
-
A record-protection switch
-
Labels showing the format and recording capacity
Although these formats record video digitally, the physical tape can still deteriorate. Heat, humidity, dust, mould, physical damage and repeated playback can affect the tape or prevent it from playing correctly.
DVCAM Cassette Sizes and Dimensions
DVCAM was commonly produced in two cassette sizes:
-
Small DVCAM cassette: approximately 66 × 48 × 12.2 mm
-
Standard DVCAM cassette: approximately 125 × 78 × 14.6 mm
Small cassettes were commonly used in professional camcorders. Standard cassettes were used in studio decks and for longer recordings.
DVCPRO Cassette Sizes and Dimensions
DVCPRO was commonly produced in medium and large cassette sizes:
-
Medium DVCPRO cassette: approximately 97.5 × 64.5 × 14.6 mm
-
Large DVCPRO cassette: approximately 125 × 78 × 14.6 mm
Cassette colour and labelling can help identify the particular DVCPRO format, but the tape should always be checked using its printed format name and model number.
Recording Length and Capacity
Common recording capacities include:
-
Small DVCAM cassettes: approximately 12 to 40 minutes
-
Standard DVCAM cassettes: approximately 32 to 184 minutes
-
Medium DVCPRO cassettes: up to approximately 66 minutes in DVCPRO25
-
Large DVCPRO cassettes: up to approximately 126 minutes in DVCPRO25
Actual recording time depends on the cassette model and recording format. DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD use higher data rates, so the available recording time can be shorter than it is with DVCPRO25.
Contact Precision Transfers if you are uncertain whether a tape is DVCAM, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50, DVCPRO HD or another DV-based format.
Professional Transfer Process
Each cassette is inspected before playback and transferred using compatible professional video equipment. The recorded video and audio are captured and converted into a modern digital file.
Because DVCAM and DVCPRO already contain digitally recorded video, using the correct playback deck is important for accurate recovery of the original footage, audio and recording information.
The standard delivery format is MP4, which is suitable for viewing, storing and sharing on modern devices. Other editing or archival formats may be available by request.

Care and Preparation
Keep each tape inside its protective case and store it upright in a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment. Protect the cassette from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, dust, smoke and strong magnetic fields.
Do not touch the exposed magnetic tape, open the cassette shell or attempt a household repair. Do not play an old or damaged cassette in unverified equipment because a mechanical problem could damage the tape.
Clearly label each cassette with its title, recording date and reference number. If known, indicate whether the tape is DVCAM, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50 or DVCPRO HD. Include information about the television standard, timecode or audio configuration when relevant.
Contact Precision Transfers before shipping tapes with visible mould, water damage, cracked shells, loose tape or other physical problems.
After receiving your converted files, save backup copies in at least two locations, such as an external drive and secure cloud storage.

How it Works
The process is easy, simply create your order, send in your media and we'll digitize your memories.

Place an Online Order
Place your order after selecting the media type and quantity, adding it to cart, and then creating an account.

Send in Your Media
The cost of shipping to Precision Transfers is not included in the rate and is handled by Canada Post or your local courier. The return shipment fee is available when placing your order if you wish to return tapes or films. Free return shipping is also available for orders over $150. The customer may choose to recycle the originals rather than return it upon completion.

View & Save Your Media
The transferred files are sent via a Google Drive link where you can download them. You can then save the file to your local drive or your USB drive. Due to the fact that this format is no longer supported by the industry, we do not support transfers to DVD. High-quality MP4 files are the standard transfer format, and we also store a backup locally for six months. Please let us know if you have a specific format request.
