Digital Betacam Transfer to Digital
Precision Transfers provides professional Digital Betacam transfers to digital formats, including MP4 and, by request, Apple ProRes. This service preserves broadcast masters, news footage, television programs, commercials, corporate productions and other professional recordings stored on aging Digital Betacam tapes.
Introduced by Sony in 1993, Digital Betacam—also known as DigiBeta or D-Beta—is a professional digital videotape format. It records standard-definition component video using 10-bit, 4:2:2 digital sampling, providing excellent colour reproduction, low noise and dependable image quality.
Digital Betacam resembles other Betacam formats, but the recorded signal is different. These tapes require compatible professional Digital Betacam equipment and cannot be played in a consumer Betamax or VHS machine.
Tape Materials and Construction
Digital Betacam uses ½-inch magnetic recording tape housed inside a rigid plastic cassette shell. The tape contains a metal-particle magnetic recording layer engineered for professional digital video and audio recording.
The cassette includes two internal reels, a protective sliding tape cover and identification markings. Digital Betacam cassettes are commonly blue-grey and are usually labelled “Digital Betacam,” “DigiBeta” or with a BCT-D model number.
This enclosed construction protects the magnetic tape during normal storage and handling. However, age, dust, humidity, mould, heat and repeated playback can still damage the recording.
Supported Cassette Sizes and Dimensions
Digital Betacam was manufactured in two principal cassette sizes:
-
Small cassette: approximately 156 × 96 × 25 mm
-
Large cassette: approximately 254 × 145 × 25 mm
Small cassettes were commonly used in professional cameras and portable recording equipment. Large cassettes were generally used in broadcast studios, editing facilities and longer-form production environments.
Recording Length and Capacity
Common Digital Betacam recording capacities include:
-
Small cassettes: approximately 6, 12, 22, 32 or 40 minutes
-
Large cassettes: approximately 34, 64, 94 or 124 minutes
-
Maximum common small-cassette capacity: 40 minutes
-
Maximum common large-cassette capacity: 124 minutes
Recording time is normally printed on the cassette label or included in its model number. Contact Precision Transfers if the format, cassette size or recording length is uncertain.
Professional Transfer Process
Each tape is inspected before playback and transferred using maintained professional Digital Betacam equipment. The recorded video and audio are captured and converted into a modern digital file while retaining the quality and character of the original standard-definition recording.
Because Digital Betacam is already a digital recording format, using the correct professional playback equipment is important for accurate reproduction of its video, colour and audio information.

Care and Preparation
Keep Digital Betacam tapes in their protective cases and store them upright in a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment. Protect the tapes from moisture, direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, dust, magnetic fields and physical impacts.
Do not open the cassette shell, touch the exposed magnetic tape or attempt to repair damaged tape with household adhesive. Avoid playing an old or damaged cassette in unverified equipment because a malfunctioning machine could damage the tape.
Clearly label each cassette with its title or reference number before submitting it. If a tape has visible mould, a damaged shell, loose tape or signs of water exposure, contact Precision Transfers before shipping it.
After receiving your converted files, save backup copies in at least two locations, such as an external drive and secure cloud storage.

How it Works
The process is easy, simply create your order, send in your media and we'll digitize your memories.

Place an Online Order
Place your order after selecting the media type and quantity, adding it to cart, and then creating an account.

Send in Your Media
The cost of shipping to Precision Transfers is not included in the rate and is handled by Canada Post or your local courier. The return shipment fee is available when placing your order if you wish to return tapes or films. Free return shipping is also available for orders over $150. The customer may choose to recycle the originals rather than return it upon completion.

View & Save Your Media
The transferred files are sent via a Google Drive link where you can download them. You can then save the file to your local drive or your USB drive. Due to the fact that this format is no longer supported by the industry, we do not support transfers to DVD. High-quality MP4 files are the standard transfer format, and we also store a backup locally for six months. Please let us know if you have a specific format request.
