PAL and SECAM are television signal standards rather than physical tape formats. A VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, Video8, Hi8, Digital8 or DV cassette may contain a PAL or SECAM recording depending on the country and equipment in which it was created.

These recordings require compatible international playback equipment. A tape recorded in PAL or SECAM may not display correctly in a standard North American NTSC machine.

Physical Materials

The physical products handled by this service are magnetic videotape cassettes. Their primary material is flexible polyester film coated with a magnetic recording layer.

Depending on the cassette format and manufacturer, the magnetic coating may contain:

• Ferric-oxide magnetic particles

• Cobalt-enhanced oxide particles

• Metal-particle magnetic material

• Metal-evaporated magnetic material

VHS, VHS-C and S-VHS commonly use polyester film with an oxide-based magnetic coating. Video8 and Hi8 generally use metal-particle or metal-evaporated magnetic coatings. MiniDV and full-size DV commonly use metal-evaporated magnetic tape.

The tape is wound onto plastic reels and enclosed inside a rigid moulded-plastic cassette shell. Additional components can include metal springs, plastic guide rollers, a protective tape door and a record-protection tab or switch.

Product Dimensions

This service accepts source-media products ranging from a MiniDV cassette measuring approximately 66 mm wide × 48 mm high × 12.2 mm deep to a full-size VHS cassette measuring approximately 188 mm wide × 104 mm high × 25 mm deep.

Accepted product dimensions, measured as width × height × depth, include:

• VHS and S-VHS: 188 × 104 × 25 mm

• VHS-C and S-VHS-C: 92 × 58 × 20 mm

• Video8, Hi8 and Digital8: 95 × 62.5 × 15 mm

• MiniDV: 66 × 48 × 12.2 mm

• Full-size DV: 125 × 78 × 14.6 mm

The maximum standard cassette size supported by this service is approximately 188 × 104 × 25 mm. Contact Precision Transfers before ordering if the cassette has different dimensions or an unusual physical design.

Tape Construction and Durability

A typical PAL or SECAM videotape cassette contains:

• Two internal tape reels

• A flexible polyester film base

• A magnetic recording coating

• A rigid plastic outer shell

• A protective tape cover

• Internal plastic or metal guides

• A record-protection tab or switch

• A label identifying the format and recording length

The cassette shell helps protect the magnetic tape during storage and handling. However, tape materials can deteriorate because of heat, moisture, dust, mould, chemical breakdown, repeated playback or improper storage.

The magnetic coating can separate from the polyester base. The tape can also stretch, wrinkle, break or become tangled as it ages.

Understanding PAL, SECAM and NTSC

• PAL: A colour television system commonly used in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, parts of Asia and other regions.

• SECAM: A colour television system historically used in France, parts of Eastern Europe, Africa and other regions.

• NTSC: The television system traditionally used in Canada, the United States, Japan and several other countries.

Most PAL and SECAM recordings use a 625-line, 50-field television structure that produces approximately 25 interlaced frames per second. North American NTSC recordings use a different 525-line, approximately 60-field structure.

Correct identification and compatible playback equipment help preserve normal colour, picture stability, audio and playback speed.

Recording Length and Capacity

Recording capacity depends on the cassette format, tape length and recording mode.

Common capacities include:

• PAL VHS tapes commonly labelled E-120, E-180, E-240 or E-300

• Video8 and Hi8 tapes commonly ranging from 30 to 180 minutes

• Digital8 tapes commonly providing approximately half the labelled Hi8 recording time

• MiniDV tapes commonly ranging from 30 to 80 minutes in standard-play mode

• Full-size DV tapes capable of holding longer professional recordings

Long-play and extended-play recordings can contain more footage. These recordings may be more difficult to recover if the tape or original equipment was damaged or misaligned.

Professional Digital Conversion Process

Each cassette is inspected and identified before playback. The tape is then played using professional equipment compatible with its physical format and recorded television standard.

The recorded video and audio are captured and converted into an MP4 file. The completed file can be downloaded and saved to a computer, external drive, USB drive or cloud-storage account.

This process allows international recordings to be viewed without requiring the original foreign television equipment or tape machine.

The finished file reflects the condition and original quality of the recording. Image noise, colour problems, tracking errors, damaged audio or signal dropouts already present on the tape may remain in the digital copy.

Care and Preparation

Keep each cassette inside its protective case and store it upright in a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment. Protect the magnetic tape from direct sunlight, excessive heat, high humidity, dust, smoke and strong magnetic fields.

Do not touch the exposed polyester-based magnetic tape, open the plastic cassette shell or attempt a household repair. Avoid playing an old or damaged tape in incompatible equipment because the cassette or recorded signal could be damaged.

Clearly label each cassette with its title, recording date and country of origin. If known, indicate whether the recording is PAL, SECAM or NTSC and identify the original camcorder or recording equipment.

Contact Precision Transfers before shipping a cassette with visible mould, water damage, a cracked plastic shell, loose tape or another physical problem.

After receiving your MP4 files, save backup copies in at least two locations, such as an external drive and secure cloud storage.
