S-VHS Tape Transfer to Digital

Super VHS, commonly called S-VHS, was introduced by JVC in 1987 as an improved version of the VHS recording format. S-VHS records more picture detail than standard VHS and was used for consumer camcorders, professional video production, educational programs, corporate communications and local television.

S-VHS requires compatible playback equipment. Although the cassette looks almost identical to a standard VHS tape, a regular VHS machine may not reproduce the enhanced S-VHS recording correctly.

Tape Materials and Construction

S-VHS cassettes contain ½-inch magnetic videotape wound between two internal reels inside a rigid plastic shell.

The tape normally has a thin polyester base with a high-performance magnetic coating designed to record the additional picture detail used by S-VHS.

A typical S-VHS cassette contains:

• Two internal tape reels

• ½-inch magnetic videotape

• A rigid plastic outer shell

• A hinged protective tape cover

• Internal tape guides

• A record-protection tab

• An identification hole used by compatible equipment

• A label showing the tape length and recording information

The cassette shell protects the tape during normal storage, but age, heat, humidity, dust, mould and repeated playback can still cause deterioration.

Cassette Size and Dimensions

A standard full-size S-VHS cassette measures approximately:

• Width: 188 mm

• Height: 104 mm

• Thickness: 25 mm

• Approximately 7.4 × 4.1 × 1 inch

S-VHS uses the same general cassette size as standard VHS. S-VHS-C is the compact camcorder version and has different physical dimensions. Contact Precision Transfers if you are unsure which format you have.

Recording Length and Capacity

Recording time depends on the cassette length, recording speed and television standard.

A common North American ST-120 or T-120 cassette can hold approximately:

• 120 minutes in SP, or Standard Play

• 240 minutes in LP, or Long Play

• 360 minutes in EP or SLP, also called Extended Play

Other S-VHS cassette lengths were also available. Some professional tapes were designed for shorter recordings, while longer cassettes could hold more than two hours in SP mode.

PAL and SECAM recordings use different running times and require compatible playback equipment. Contact Precision Transfers if the tape was recorded outside North America or if the television standard is unknown.

Professional Transfer Process

Each cassette is inspected before playback and transferred using compatible S-VHS equipment. The analog video and audio are captured and converted into a modern MP4 digital file.

The completed MP4 can be downloaded and saved to a computer, USB drive, external drive or cloud-storage account. It can also be played on many computers, tablets, smartphones and smart TVs.

Using proper S-VHS playback equipment helps retain the additional picture detail recorded by the format.

The finished digital file reflects the condition and quality of the original recording. Image noise, colour instability, tracking problems, damaged audio or signal dropouts already present on the cassette may remain visible or audible after transfer.

Care and Preparation

Keep each S-VHS cassette inside its protective case and store it upright in a clean, dry and temperature-controlled environment. Protect the cassette from direct sunlight, excessive heat, high humidity, dust, smoke and strong magnetic fields.

Do not touch the exposed magnetic tape or open the cassette shell. Do not attempt to repair damaged tape using household adhesive. Avoid playing an old or damaged cassette in unverified equipment because the tape could become tangled, stretched or broken.

Clearly label each cassette with its title, recording date or reference number. If known, include the recording speed, television standard and whether the cassette contains S-VHS or standard VHS material.

Contact Precision Transfers before shipping a cassette with visible mould, water damage, a cracked shell, loose tape or other physical damage.

After receiving your MP4 files, save backup copies in at least two locations, such as an external drive and secure cloud storage.
