Materials & Construction

Most 33⅓ RPM LPs and 45 RPM singles are manufactured from polyvinyl chloride, commonly called vinyl. Many older 78 RPM records were made from a more brittle shellac-based material rather than modern vinyl.

Records store sound in a continuous spiral groove pressed into the surface of the disc. A stylus follows the groove during playback and converts its movement into an audio signal. Dust, fingerprints, scratches, groove wear, cracks, and warping can affect playback and the quality of the resulting digital file.

Record Dimensions & Supported Speeds

This Vinyl Record Transfer service supports the most common consumer record dimensions and playback speeds:

• 7-inch records—approximately 17.8 cm in diameter and commonly played at 45 RPM

• 10-inch records—approximately 25.4 cm in diameter and commonly associated with older 78 RPM recordings

• 12-inch records—approximately 30.5 cm in diameter and commonly used for 33⅓ RPM LP albums

• 33⅓ RPM records—typically long-playing albums

• 45 RPM records—typically singles or extended-play releases

• 78 RPM records—typically older shellac recordings

Record thickness, weight, groove type, and playing time vary by manufacturer and release. A 12-inch LP commonly contains approximately 15 to 25 minutes of audio per side, while 7-inch singles are generally shorter.

Care & Preparation

Handle records only by their edges and labelled centre area. Avoid touching the playing surface because fingerprints, oils, and debris can collect in the grooves and affect playback.

Store records vertically in protective inner and outer sleeves. Keep them in a clean, dry, and temperature-controlled environment away from excessive heat, humidity, dust, direct sunlight, and pressure. Do not stack records horizontally for extended periods because this can contribute to warping and sleeve damage.

Do not attempt aggressive cleaning or repair on cracked, warped, flaking, or fragile records. Shellac 78 RPM records require special care and should not be cleaned using products intended exclusively for modern vinyl.
